The industry standard West System Epoxy is used throughout the
construction of the Carlson Boatworks 25. West System has been reliably
used for over 30 years in building epoxy composite wood boats, and their
experience is unrivaled in the epoxy industry. It is entirely possible to
create composite wooden boats that are impervious to moisture penetration by
completely coating each wood piece in the boat with the West System Epoxy. The
meticulous attention to detail in the manufacturing process of the CB 25
utilizing the West System Epoxy is designed to avoid moisture penetration
problems that often causes damage even to fiberglass boats.
The exterior of a wood boat has traditionally been finished
in varnish and has required the significant rite of ownership that included
annual recoatings followed up with complete refinishing every few years.
Carlson Boatworks expects that its purchasers have other ideas as to how to
spend their weekends and this means spending time on the water instead of next
to it. To accomplish this, the finished exterior portions of the boat are first
color dyed to bring out the rich tones of the mahogany. This is coated in a
transparent layer of UV resistant epoxy and transparent microlight cloth
creating a hard, moisture proof coating. This substrate then is layered in 12
coats of Acrylic Urethane creating a smooth, crystal clear finish. This final
clear coat requires only an annual coating of wax and after many years
(depending upon the amount of UV exposure due to latitude and storage
conditions) a light buffing with a fine compound may be required. This clear
finish is nearly five times thicker than a modern automobile finish and only
requires the same basic annual care.
