With a wide selection of available wood types for use in
the construction of the wooden boat, there were several criteria that had to be
evaluated before any consideration of its use. The first decision for the
designer of a composite wood boat is ensuring that the selected wood is suitable
for epoxy laminated construction. The next decision is selecting the suitable
strength of wood to create the best engineered structure. The final decision in
wood choice is squarely dependent on the longevity of the wood in a marine
environment even though it is completely encapsulated in an impenetrable epoxy
coating. One decision that did not have to be made at Carlson Boatworks
was the relative cost of the raw lumber. We simply selected the best for the
application. No compromises.
Douglas Fir is used for all of the skeletal frame members
of the boat. Frames and longitudinal members are laminated from hand chosen
boards. The skin of the bottom of the hull, the base layers above the
waterline, and gussets used for reinforcing the frame are manufactured from
Okoume marine plywood. This is Lloyds of London approved marine plywood
specifically chosen for its flawless, void free construction and certified
durability. The gleaming final layer of the exterior laminated hull and all the
interior portions of the CB 25 are finished in select Genuine Honduran
Mahogany. It is selected for its traditional appearance, strength, and inherent
beauty. To compliment the fine Honduran Mahogany interior, Burma Teak was
chosen for the hand-laid flooring.
